Description

IC1318, the Sadr region, is one of the wonders of the summer sky. It is a complex of emission and dark nebulae that surround the star Sadr (γ Cygni), the “heart” of the constellation of Cygnus. These nebulae are the birthplace of new stars, which light up the interstellar gas with their radiation. Among the most spectacular nebulae that are part of IC1318 are the Butterfly Nebula, the Crescent Nebula, and the Soap Bubble Nebula. The Butterfly Nebula is a large cloud of gas and dust that has the shape of two symmetrical wings. The Crescent Nebula is the result of the ejection of the outer layers of a red supergiant, which left behind a Wolf-Rayet star. This star created a cavity in the interstellar medium with its powerful stellar wind, which formed a crescent-shaped structure that emits red light. The Soap Bubble Nebula is a planetary nebula, the shell of gas that a star similar to the Sun expelled when it became a white dwarf. This nebula has an almost perfectly spherical and transparent shape, which resembles a soap bubble. IC1318 is located about 5500 light years from us and extends for about 110x60 arc-minutes, occupying a large portion of the sky.

Here I post the SHO version. A NBLRGB version is visible on my Flickr page.
